Indian culture is known for imbuing life’s values with beauty, purity, and profound meaning. The vast expanse of life can be understood and appreciated through the festivals a
nd celebrations it observes. Among these various festivals, we will explore a unique one today: Makar Sankranti.
Makar Sankranti is one of the most important and celebrated solar festivals in the Hindu calendar. In different regions, it is also known as Uttarayan, Makar, or simply Sankranti. It is celebrated in mid-winter. Interestingly, this festival is also considered a harvest festival, celebrated primarily in India and partially in neighboring countries. According to astrology, this festival symbolizes the Sun God’s entry into the Capricorn zodiac sign from Sagittarius. This astronomical event marks the beginning of the sun’s northward journey, known as Uttarayan. It signifies the return of light, warmth, and auspiciousness after the harsh winter, which is associated with many values of life. While most Hindu festivals are governed by the lunar calendar, Makar Sankranti is determined by the solar cycle, which in itself provides a beautiful indication of its uniqueness. This festival is entirely dedicated to the Sun God. Sankranti is a transcendental symbol of the origin of energy, renewal, new beginnings, and harmonious alignment with the cosmic rhythm of human life.
Despite numerous social and regional variations across the earth, this festival shares some common elements that make it even more delightful, such as gratitude for the harvest, reverence for the sun, and community celebrations. Makar Sankranti holds immense spiritual significance. In the Mahabharata, Bhishma Pitamah’s conscious decision to leave his body while lying on a bed of arrows during the Kurukshetra war, at the time when the sun begins its northward journey, establishes Makar Sankranti as more than just a seasonal ritual; it becomes a cosmic gateway to liberation. (Bhishma, who had the boon of choosing the time of his own death, deliberately waited for the arrival of Uttarayana to relinquish his mortal form.)
