The Upanishadic scriptures state that falsehood has neither a beginning nor an end. Maya (illusion) has neither an origin nor a conclusion. Similarly, in reality, there is neither a body nor destiny. There is neither this body nor any karma, but to resolve the doubts of the ignorant, the concepts of body, karma, and destiny are discussed superficially from an external perspective. In reality, there is neither a body nor destiny.
This may seem very confusing, but it is true because all scriptures are entirely based on this level, merely to explain things to the unenlightened. They are simply symbolic; one has to begin the conversation with the ignorant according to their understanding, such as “this is suffering” and “this is happiness,” etc. Good deeds lead to happiness, and bad deeds cause suffering. All these explanations point to the idea that this is a real world, but when a person awakens and becomes conscious, breaks free from the body, and when ignorance is destroyed, they are astonished and smile, realizing that what was left behind was not real, but a grand dream. And the solutions we devised were also dreams within dreams.
For example, Ramakrishna was a devotee of Kali, but out of humility, he was also ready to follow the path suggested by someone else. Then one day, a Vedanta teacher arrived. He insisted on finding the One, saying, “Find the One; this is duality, the devotee and Brahman.” Ramakrishna displayed remarkable humility, placed his head at the teacher’s feet, and offered to learn. During meditation, Ramakrishna experienced great bliss and felt that he saw Kali even in meditation. Feeling this contradiction, the Vedanta teacher said, “How can this be? This is just your imagination, and if you remain in this bliss, you will not be able to be free from it. To be free from this, take a sword and cut it into two pieces.” Ramakrishna retorted, “Where will I get a sword in that state? And that too, from within? If the sword is outside, how will it be possible to bring it inside?” So the Vedanta teacher said, “If you have managed to conjure up Kali within your mind, won’t you be able to conjure up a sword with the same mind?” This example explains the method of a dream within a dream. Kali is also an imagination within, pleasant no doubt, but it has its own nature, its own expansion, which has become a mental image within. It is our own desire, our own colors that we have projected within. The Kali standing within is also a manifestation of Ramakrishna’s own feelings. Seeing Ramakrishna’s state of enchantment, the Vedanta teacher, in order to free Ramakrishna from this illusion, used the act of rubbing an object on the spot of the third eye and, with the help of inner experience, ensured the cutting away of the reflection of that attachment. Ramakrishna gathered courage, and that attached image broke, and finally Ramakrishna said, “The last obstacle has fallen.”
But all these methods imply that even existence is an illusion within, and the sword that cuts is also an illusion within. But one illusion cuts another illusion. This is what the sages of all our Upanishads are telling us—methods to cut away that which is not the subject of reality. These are solutions for liberation from the things we have considered real in life. Just as a false illness demands a false cure. Our entire feeling is that the world is false, therefore any of these methods can work if you grasp it. A dream within a dream, cutting a dream with a dream, there is no other way. Truth cannot be cut by truth, nor can it be cut by anything else. Truth cannot be cut by falsehood either, because truth and falsehood have no meeting point, so how can they be cut? Falsehood is cut only by falsehood, just as a thorn in the foot is removed with another thorn. So this sutra says that there is neither body, nor karma, nor destiny, nor world. In reality, when a person becomes aware of the truth of their own being, all these life-like truths become false. As soon as one knows oneself, the world becomes an illusion.
