The Upanishads and Vedic astrology (Jyotisha) reveal a profound connection between the microcosm of the human body and the macrocosm of the universe. In this ancient worldview, the body is seen as a “temple of the soul,” with specific organs and functions reflecting the influence of celestial bodies.
According to astrology, the human body is called microcosmos (Pindanda) and contains all the elements (tatawas) present in the macrocosmos known as the cosmos (Bramhand). The entire cosmos is composed of the five elements: ether, air, fire, water, and earth. The planets Jupiter, Saturn, Sun, Mars, Moon, Venus, and Mercury are also assigned to different elements among the five mentioned above. These planets respectively represent the ears, skin, eyes, mouth, and nose, which are the subtle organs of the human body. The five senses represent the subtle nature, known as Shabda (sound), Sparsha (touch), Rupa (sight), Rasa (taste), and Gandha (smell).
The Srimad Bhagavatam states that the Supreme Lord created His body in three ways through His Maya (illusory power). In the first type, there are eleven senses, and each of these senses is assigned a presiding deity; thus, the Lord’s body is called the Adidaivika body. Secondly, the individual soul is called Adhyatma, and thirdly, the five elements are called Adibhuta. The Supreme Lord created within Himself the power to bestow sensory power (sensory power, mental power, and physical power) and divine power. Finally, the universal life force called Mahapranna, the Sutratma, came into existence. Then all the senses began to function with complete obedience, like loyal servants to their master. Once this Mahaprana departs, the functions ofthe senses cease. On this basis, the Supreme Lord, Ishvara, is considered the motivating force or conscious energy in all beings.
The Upanishad says:
“Anoraniyan mahato mahiyan atma guhayam nihitosya jantoh”
This means that God resides in the subtlest form of atoms in every human being, creature, etc., and acts as the Mahapranna, providing life force to all living things.
